Gypsum CO
The town of Gypsum is named for the Gypsum mineral mined in the area and used primarily for wallboard.
Gypsum was first settled in the early 1880′s, generally counted from the date that O.W. Daggett first pitched his tent in the area. By 1884 there were 31 ranches in the Valley. In the mid-1880′s, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad came through.
In 1905, President Teddy Roosevelt was in the Gypsum area hunting bear. He refused an offer from the governor for a special license for elk and deer, saying that was against the laws of Colorado.
Gypsum is the location of the Eagle County Regional Airport used by skiers to reach Vail.
